Wars of the Roses : Lion Rampant with a Twist

Rafael has been adapting Lion Rampant rules to use with bigger armies, so today we tried out his amendments and he brought his troops along too !

I had this Lancastrian force

commanded by this Lord

Pikemen away on the left

And here's Rafael's beloved Yorkist king

and his troops

including artillery

Two distinct wings to his army - this is the furthest

with cavalry in reserve

My Lancastrians start to advance

as do the Yorkists

My right wing stops to fire their bows as the centre reaches the ridge

Rafael's right wing fails a command roll and refuses to move as his centre unit reaches the road

The Lancastrians have control of the centre of the battlefield

The Yorkists give fire and the Lancastrian pike unit take casualties and they retreat.

My Lancastrians fire at the enemy on the road, inflicting casualties

In preparation for a charge

My  bowman are doing sterling work against the Yorkist left wing (yellow rings are casualties)

So we advance on the right too

Rafael's right wing refuse to move again !(Failed command roll number two)

This leaves the centre Yorkist unit quite alone

So let's charge them !

The Yorkists recoil with casualties

Rafael's left wing has broken and run because of excess casualties

Here's a birds eye view of the battlefield at this stage

With the enemy centre falling back

The Lancastrian cavalry move up

Side view - Yorkist left & centre gone after failing morale throws

The Lancastrians scent blood !

Forwards !

The Yorkist King has one asset left - his heavy cavalry

They charge the Lancastrian centre

to try and stop the rot.

They win but not by a big margin

but enough to push back the Lancastrians - but they do not break. This means the Yorkist cavalry are now embroiled in combat with three enemy units around them - not good !

At this point, Rafael concedes and the Lancastrians are declared winners.

The Lion Rampant rules by Dan Mersey

Rafael's "big army" adaptations seem to work - after all, my Lancastrians can't complain !
