Bob Pace came to the Billericay War Rooms today for his first game of Dux Britanniarum.
We did the Church Raid scenario and Bob chose the Saxon attackers.
We played out the pre-game events of Speeches, Drinking & Consulting the Gods (not the Champions fighting this time) and the Romano-British managed to start with a higher Morale than their enemy - also the Saxon leader managed to get his status reduced from a three to a two which doesn't help !
The Too Fat Lardies Dux rules - marvellous !
Romano-British start morale
Saxon start morale
The Saxon force has got a head start and is well within church raiding distance right from the outset !
A nervous looking priest emerges to see what all the noise is about.
Fortunately for me, the first cards out are British and two groups of Levy plus shortly thereafter a formation of warriors appear to head off the Saxons.
The warriors charge into action and drive off a group of enemy warriors at the cost of one dead and some shock
Bob sends in two more groups of Saxons with a Lord
Both sides inflicting casualties but the line holds
The British warriors and levy have formed shield wall ( as indicated by the cards) and the British Lord has arrived to take control supported by some slingers
The shock mounting on the British warriors has the effect of driving them back
Ambush! Bob had some elite troops hidden in the woods and they now charge out, shocking all enemy within 18 inches and
they hit an isolated group of British levy
The Saxons make short work of them !
but British elites replace them in the line - a much more difficult proposition.
but bodies are tumbling
The British warriors have been hit again and flee with double their allowed shock limit
The two elite units are wiping each other out !
Now the British Lord adds his weight to the levy shield wall as slingers try to inflict some damage on the Saxons
a mad dash forwards by the remaining Saxon group results in disaster for them - they all die !
So despite seeing their better quality troops suffer, the British levy shield wall has seen off attack after attack and defeated the Saxon raiders.
Britain is safe for another day !
This was a real nail biter of a game and it could have gone either way - the best sort of battle.
Welcome to Dux Britanniarum, Bob !
A ding-dong scrap there! In a Dux B campaign it might be difficult for the Lord to replace his elites in a hurry, but seeing the Saxons off the premises for a while won't hurt one bit.
ReplyDeleteAs it was an introductory raid, AJ, it wasn't so bad - but I know what you mean !!!
