Two Bridges - a Black Powder game

Apologies, I am way behind with blogging !  Several games to report but we will start with this one which was fought a month ago - Mike had the French defending the Empire in 1814 as Bavarians and Austrians attempt to cross the border and invade France.

French on the left, Allies right. A Bavarian column attempts to storm the bridge into town before the French can react.

But French Guard cavalry charge into action forcing the Bavarians to go into square thus blocking any further progress across the river

They do manage to drive them off but this has given the French time to bring up infantry and guns

Further Allied troops approach the other bridge upstream but the French have got Guard infantry blocking that

Allied artillery is massed on the river bank to try and drive back the French defenders

Some of Mike's infantry have managed to occupy the buildings and fire on the Bavarian troops massing in and around the bridge. Efforts to find fords as well have not borne fruit.

Repeated attempts are made to drive a crossing at both bridges

It turns into a big slogging match - Austrian infantry march up river still seeking another crossing

But the French fight on doggedly

The Allied cavalry is unable to help as the way is blocked

Gradually, the Allied battalions get worn down and have to pull back to reform, being replaced by fresh units

In the end, we had to call off the attack as there was no way through and the attackers were just losing troops for no possible gain.

Oh for more than two bridges !!!
