We decided to do "Raid the Church" and Michelle opted to be the Romano-British defenders. Our hands of cards were sorted out and I diced to see how many moves my Saxons would get before the British could react - three ! Marvellous !
So my Saxon force has closed in on the village in no time.
At last the British leader has woken up and leads on all bar one of his units
but the Saxons are already in the village and heading for the church.
The British run to try and stop them
This Saxon group of warriors reach the church door and prepare to enter to look for the loot.
as other groups pass to block off the approaching British
and soon a Saxon formation is ready
the British are still a way off
some British slingers have appeared on the high ground but they are too far away
the British Lord needs to get his Levy and Warriors into battle
he takes his personal bodyguard and champion around the other side of the woods
but the Saxons are well spread out in the village covering all the exits
insults are hurled at each other before any real weapons
The British have braced a shield wall
but really they need to be more aggressive
the Saxons are not going to be lured out of the village for that
this just gives more time to the looters to find any hidden treasure
However, the Saxon Lord has taken his Oath sworn men to drive off the British
with an aggressive charge card against the Levy
the Levy have the numbers but the Saxons the quality
who will prevail ?
Its a good distraction so the looters carry on - but no luck so far
The British Levy falls back and their leader is wounded
If he doesn't fall back with his men, he will die !
the Levy need to regroup
Saxon archers have spied the British Lord with his retinue and open fire
Sensing blood, more Saxons advance to tackle the Levy
the British Lord ignores the enemy archers and charges around the back of the Saxon battle line
as better quality British warriors arrive to replace the battered Levy in the fight
Suddenly, the Saxons are having to fight on two fronts
the British Lord plays the Carpe Diem card to prevent the Saxons from turning so he can catch them in the back
but despite that, the Saxons fight on
the sound of swords and axes crashing on shields rings around the village
this could go either way
having survived the initial British charge in their rear, the Saxon Lord turns his men
both sides are taking casualties
including leaders
but the Saxons push back the British Lord and his household troops
and the Saxon warriors are getting the better of the fight with their British counterparts
Warriors and Levy are pushed back
and now the Saxons charge again
the fight is taking its toll on the British
the British are all mixed up with Levy and Warriors getting in each others way
they fall back again from the Saxon onslaught
the British try another two pincered charge against the Saxon Lord
as his Warriors are busy elsewhere
these British warriors are trying to fight their way through to the church
but despite their numbers and inflicting some pain on the enemy, they fail to break through
and the British Lord now loses his Champion in the fighting
He too is unable to break through the Saxon lines
the Saxon Lord charges against his enemy
and the British numbers dwindle
Why does she have to ask me so many questions - I can't remember all the rules !
the British elite troops have been wiped out
British slingers have found their way around the back of the Saxon archers
but this is of no use to the British leader who is fighting alone
wherever we look, the Saxons are winning
the British Lord has managed to escape but his army is battered
and scattered
they are now getting picked off piecemeal
a desperate defence line is cobbled together of mixed Levy and Warriors
as another Saxon charge drives into them
the British break and flee
the British Lord tries to rally his men again
the Saxons chase them off
So, the Saxons can ransack the church at their leisure
At last, I can put back on my face that winners smirk again !
Hope she will play again next week though ?
A bloody scrap all round. Great AAR.
