The Attack on Gu Li.

f
Fresh from their recent victory, the Bolsheviks have pressed on to the border town of Gu Li which guards the River Dim Sun.  Chinese troops hold this in strength around the town gate & Customs House.

The Russians send some allied tribal cavalry forward to cause confusion.

"Dare to Die" Chinese swordsmen are rushed to the gateway.

And the Chinese have their own local tribesmen under arms.

And look - the famous Arms Dealer, Adman Kashsnoggi, is handing over an Armoured Car to the Town Major.

The British Consul and his Politcal Officer spy this

Whilst a Travelling Officer gathers other intelligence.

The Britiah Consul orders his garrison to full alert.

All's under control for now, but we can expect an attack on Gu Li any moment, he murmers.

To be continued ...

SELWG'12

An interesting visit to the South East London Show.

A view of the main hall from the balcony. There were 57 different traders spread over two floors.

Here I am on the lower floor.

And here's Henry Hyde, Battlegames Editor, hard at work - so hard he never knew I took his picture !

Next, a 28mm Ancient Germans v Romans clash ...

A superb Dark Ages "Battle of Benfleet" game put on by, I believe, Southend Wargames Club.

Lots and lots of twigs from the garden were employed here after sharpening !

And a beautiful 15mm Napoleonic game ...

WWII and the Germans are landing ...

Carlist Wars using Perry Twins figures ...

And finally, from me, another Dark Ages scrap.  This one was on the South London Warlords table, IIRC ...

The traders seemed to be doing a steady stream of business and this is the first time I recall queueing outside to get into SELWG (maybe we were earlier than usual ?) In particular, the Bring & Buy was as manic as you'd expect but the staff remained calm and friendly.

I certainly picked up some useful bits and pieces and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Well done again to South East London Wargames Group !

Irish Chariot for Dux Britanniarum.

I was delighted to see this on Lard Island News (the blog for Too Fat Lardies wargames rules) as I had bought and painted one a few years ago - and then wondered what I was going to do with it !

This was before Dux Brit came along and now there are plans afoot for a supplement covering fighting in the Emerald Isles etc (due around Christmas if Richard Clarke is true to his word).

Anyway, here is my chariot complete with bloodthirsty leader in the back !

And here he is with his mounted retinue.

Can't wait for the new supplement as we are having great fun with Dux Brit - well done again Too Fat Lardies !

Back of Beyond.

A try out of the rules by A League of Extraordinary Kriegspielers.

The Rules.

The Bolshevik aggressors.

Cossack Irregular Cavalry.

Chinese Irregulars hold a village with HMG & General nearby.

Chinese Field Gun & Regular Infantry marching to support.

Other Regulars are already lining a wall ready for action.

Led by their General, the Cossacks head for the village.

Chinese support troops enter the field.

The Cossacks reach the outskirts of the village.

Whilst Russian infantry advance across the plain.

The Cossacks get in amongst the Chinese troops in the village centre.

After 2 rounds of melee, not many Chinese left !

Chinese MG & Mortar try to exact some revenge.

Which causes the Cossacks to charge them next.

Bolshevik Naval detachment occupy the village.

View from behind the Field Gun & Infantry position.

Attacked from both sides, the Chinese are overcome.

Thoughts ?  Well, its card-driven so it comes easy to a Lardyite.  Unless I am misreading the firing rules, the field gun didn't pack much of a "punch" (throw only one die  whereas the HMG had 6 ?).

Plenty of "Old School" rules e.g., saving throws for officers  and you need a difference of 2 points to win the individual combats in melee.

Generally easy to follow although they could have done with an index to make it easier to refer to points in the rules.  That said, I believe a later version has now been published so that may have addressed some of the issues.

Next game, I will introduce an Armoured Car to see what impact they have.
